The NC CAP Afterschool Alumni Award honors former afterschool participants in North Carolina. The award is given to alumni who have attended an afterschool program within the last ten years and who exemplify excellence, leadership, and service. Sponsoring programs will receive $1,000 awards for participant or program support.
Kara Simpson is from Gastonia, NC. Kara joined the West Gastonia Boys and Girls Club of Greater Gaston at the age of eight. She is now a member of the Junior Staff, and she volunteers by tutoring children, providing homework assistance, and helping anyone who needs her, young or old. Kara began a Literacy Advocate Program at the Club when she discovered children attending the Club who didn't know how to read. She works one on one with them to teach them basic reading skills.
Kara has also achieved great academic success, which she credits to her time spent at the Boys & Girls Club. She received homework help when she was young, and the Boys and Girls Club staff continue to encourage her to push herself academically. She has just completed her sophomore year at Hunter Huss High School, where she maintains a 4.5 GPA. She is currently ranked number one in her class and is working toward getting into a great college where she plans to study nursing. Kara is an Honor Roll student who has won a national foreign language award and a national math award. She also attended the Commissioner's School of Excellence and was a member of the Mayor's Youth Leadership Council.
She's actually a friend of mine from way back (Elementary years to be exact.) =)
