In the past, beheading the enemies or intruders was a means of the indigenous people to defend their land and protect the communities. There used to be various rituals related to head-hunting, but most of them have been lost since the practice was banned by the Japanese colonial government. Recently the Tawtawazay family of the Saisiyat revived tinato', a ceremony held before fighting enemies.
