-- Thomas Edison rode this coach
-- This coach was motorized and electrified and could drive itself
-- "Carson City" coach #103's first time in Gold Hill and Carson City
-- First time D2 coupled to Carson City
-- First time Carson City used on regular revenue run

On Friday, August 27, the latest addition to the V&T family made its first run to Gold Hill and Carson City. Granted, by truck, the #103 "Carson City" coach had been to Mound House, then up Highway 341 (truck route) to Virginia City. Indeed, this coach had never been to Gold Hill or Carson City before.

The Carson City is added to the Gold Hill and Silver City to make a three coach train, pulled by the new-old D2 diesel. I got my first cab ride in the D2 and it's shown in this video.

This is a qualified first. After being delivered in December, 2009, #103 was pulled on the main track by the D1 diesel into the Virginia City V&TRR yard. After restoration it was pulled on the mainline once just past tunnel 4 when an air hose blew.

Then, another time, it was used in a Wine Train consist that only went past tunnel 4 to the view/overlook on the Tunnel 3 shoo-fly.

Now, this coach has a history. It ran on the line that Thomas Edison used to get to work, and his presence on board is documented. Further, this coach was once able to drive under its own power, having an electric motor installed and running under catenary.

  • I know who that guy is at 3:43

  • @CoastStarlight11 Yeah, you shot him in your video, good work! Youtube is so silly to disallow URLs in comments, even if they point to another Youtube video. I posted a video response pointing to your interview with Tom Gray of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad.

  • @CoastStarlight11 and they won't allow URLs at video responses either, those turkeys! Try stringing this together, or go to Coaststarlight11's channel and search on Tom Gray.

  • And just in case anyone noticed, the sound quality of my narration improved quite a bit. I used to use my videocamera on capture mode and then I'd have to use Soundbooth to scrub out the noise from the camera, or just leave it in there.

I got ahold of a Blue Snowball microphone, it totally kicks butt, now I just record with Soundbooth. The other advantage is I only record audio and don't waste the disk space of the audio and video captured from the videocamera.

  • Why don't they ever work on those wooden coaches and that SP 0-6-0? they've been there for so long!

  • @SierraRailway Good point, in fact I am a loser and have never inquired the story/history of those wooden coaches. The 1251 (SP steam loco) tip jar is the "fund' to be used to rebuild 1251, I think they're waiting for the million dollar donation ;>) Thanks for your comment.

  • Awesome. Love the scenery too. Very fitting!

  • @virginiatruckee Its very not cool that youtube will not allow a link to be posted in a comment. I saw that video response.

  • Intense stuff!!!

  • Pretty sweet to see the V&T really coming along... so much stuff!

I remember when it was just the two coaches and if we were lucky, a steam engine!

  • Get bored and skip any of this ? Not likely......excellent footage.
