Are you kidding me? Try the 1/2/3 line at 42nd street during rush hour. Or the 6 train almost any time of day. New York makes this look tame.

When I was in Japan and rode trains like these, I never once so much as got my shoe stepped on. It was crowded as ever, but there was no unpleasant odors (personal hygiene is almost on the obsessive-compulsive level there) and it was almost silent enough to hear a pin drop--no one really talks on crowded trains. Contrast that to rush hour in Manhattan on the D train. All sorts of smells, sounds, and general tom-foolery going on... I miss Japan.

they may have meant how its crazy for them to be pushed onto a train that is already full to capacity.
