This doesn't make the one player tougher, or the other player a wimp. It simply means that a football player has to keep very little in reserve when they do anything. The next phase of play is not part of your thought process when you make a hit, or run any amount of distance. In rugby, every phase of play affects and determines your ability to perform in the next. Footballers would not and could not dominate in rugby, because their fitness is not the right "kind" to excel in rugby, and reverse.

The key differences between rugby and football are that in rugby, you perform every task, tackling, running, rucking. Offensively, defensively, you're at work for 80 minutes straight with very few breaks. In football, you have an offensive line, and a defensive line. You're on the field only for 50% of the game, and during this time, you perform your task as outlined by your individual position, and you only play for about 30 seconds of every 90. Their demands on your body are very different.
