In 1990, the last full year before the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Moscow City Council changed the names of many, but not all, city streets that honored communist leaders associated with Soviet atrocities. Today, Russian civic activists are calling for a completion of the renaming process. But as VOA Moscow Correspondent Peter Fedynsky reports, many city residents are comfortable with current names and are not aware of the bloody history they represent.

  • dzerzhinsky square was lubjanka square during ussr...

  • @cult91 The Red Army also allowed the Western Front time to recuperate while the Eastern Front was facing massive damage. The Nazi's raped, killed, and mutilated Russian civilians during Operation Barborossa, the main reason why the Soviets took revenge. You other powers just raped and looted for fun and had no reason other than the spoils of war being your reward. Ignorant Westerners these days, have no respect for great powers like the USSR was.

  • @cult91 where'd you learn that? your propagandized school? or wikipedia? you Americans Brits, etc had done absolutely everything the Soviets had done, that includes raping, pillage, and looting. And the Red Army contributed the most in the war effort on the Eastern Front, while the other powers were spending time thinking, that is exactly why the USSR had suspicion with the US during the cold war. As a human, I see disgust, IN YOU.

  • the world needs libertarians .. that was the original fight before communism, after the French Revolution.

the left (libertarians) represented free-markets and minimal government intervention

the right (conservative) represented monarchy, tyranny etc.

(things have changed now, and now its almost opposite)

socialism/marx = achieving liberal ends with conservative means. (confused middle-ground)

  • What Pride is there in the Red Army? They nearly were annihilated by the German 6th Army, but was saved by weather. And when we all were kicking Nazi's ass, unlike the American, French, British, Polish counter-parts the Reds raped woman and even young children. I see no honor. As a human I see only disgust.

  • Bravo for them indeed

  • @amsterdam78 i hope so

  • Cleanse the Motherland of Communist scum! I hate Capitalism and Communism equally. Russia needs to get rid of ALL Communist names and statues. I piss on Lenin and Stalin statues when I was in Russia!

  • I agree w/ Dude, 1905 sounds way better than new jelusalem. And, my friend laughed when I said "Czar Nicolas". He's like "Oh, hahaha! There was no Nicolas, only Nikolai"

  • @amsterdam78 Guess some people think the Soviets didn't kill enough peasents and workers the first time around, and should be returned to get the rest. Poor Russia. Hungry folk. Fearful folk. Perhaps they have good reason to fear. Did I remember to say Death to Stalin? Good.
