Maurice "The General" Starr (born 1953 in Boston, Massachusetts as Larry Johnson) is one of the most successful people in the American record industry. He is a musician, writer and record producer and is perhaps best known as the man who created the whole "boy band scene". To us old school funkers, Starr's own two albums are classics and shining examples of how great, well-produced and fun Funk could be in the late 70's and mid 80's. This P-Funkish song, however, was not on Starr's first album ("Flaming Starr", 1980), but only issued as a single. It was later recorded by Starr's group Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch on their 1993 CD "Music For The People". In 1983, Maurice returned with the splendid electro-hip-hop-funky "Spacey Lady". He was also a member of Jonzun Crew.
Wikipedia: "Starr, originally from Florida, moved to Boston with his brother Michael in the early 1970s. After moving to Boston he recorded two unsuccessful R&B albums, Flaming Starr and Spacey Lady. Since he was unsuccessful as an artist, he decided to create a band to perform the songs that he wrote. Starr won Songwriter of the Year in 1989.
In 1982, Starr found the band New Edition on his talent show. The group produced a number of U.S. Top 10 R&B hit singles and a Top 5 hit in the Billboard Hot 100. Differences between Starr and New Edition caused the two to go their separate ways. Eventually the band split up. One of the members, Bobby Brown, went on to have a successful career as a solo act, while three others formed the award winning group, Bell Biv DeVoe.
After losing New Edition, Starr needed a new band to record his songs. In 1984, he created New Kids on the Block, a band consisting of five white teenagers. Starr produced New Kids on the Block to be an updated version of The Osmonds. They were the fastest rising band in the United States.
He is considered to be the creator of the boy band scene from the 1980s, even though this term was not used until the 1990s.
He was also a member of the seminal electro group Jonzun Crew with his brothers Michael Jonzun and Soni Jonzun.
Starr started to work independently with non-mainstream groups. He is currently managing Heartbeat Boys, a boy band he assembled along with producing and writing their songs."

@CDFONK I am so glad to finally have this record! I had never heard of it until you told me. I thought "Flaming Starr" was Maurice's first record. So thanks!
