Intervals are a great way to get a high intensity effort into a short period of time to burn calories and elicit a great E.P.O.C., or "afterburn" effect. Tabata intervals are short burst work at a very high intensity followed by a 10 second rest period, for a total of 8 cycles. Tabata's research showed that this type of work to rest ratio can have a positive influence on both the anaerobic and aerobic energy systems, and that it can tax both systems almost maximally to provide adequate stimulus for a big calorie burn!
