Differential Controllers are a neat device that helps increase the overall efficiency of solar thermal (hot water) system(s) by ensuring warm/hot water is transferred. For this particular controller, this is achieved through a "dial" as you will see in the video that is set anywhere from 8-24°F (we set it to 12°F from the factory) and (2) sensors. One of the sensors will need to be placed inside the upper most collector ("hot out"), while the other at the storage tank. During the day the sensors then tell the controller what temperature is coming from the collector and what temperature is at the tank. If the collector "hot out" temperature is 12°F higher than the temperature at the storage tank, then the controller turns on the pump and then the heat transfer begins! The same thing happens at the end of the day only in reverse...The controller will shut the pump off when the temperature difference drops to 4°F or less.
