Be cool dude - - the wild animals in your part of the world dont want anything to do with you. Black bears will retreat from humans. Keep control over your imagination. Make noise while you hike and the animals will avoid you, even snakes.
I learned from Katrina victims to beware DOMESTIC DOGS - after a few days with out food they turned vicous and had no fear of humans.

The only thing you require is a survival knife and a compass, map is optional. Watch the First Blood movie. While not exactly realistic. It provides an excellent insight into the proper mindset required to survive.

I sent you a video I did on this same topic, very good points and all routes should at least be done ahead of time both in the car and on foot. Camping is very important, but also knowing your tent very well....I have rope and a tarp also for a easy shelter when you don't want to attract attention.

LOL! Hershey's a He and he always wants to hug me and kiss me hello and I did the video instead. I paid for it for sure.
He hugged me and kissed me for the World to see. Great pup.
