Here are some films by Wilson Jones of Lackawanna trains, including their flagship passenger train, "The Phoebe Snow", passing through the Roseville Tunnel on the Lackawanna Cut-Off near Byram, New Jersey.

For the last shot, Mr. Jones climbed up on a signal bridge (you can faintly see it through the tunnel in the shot of the freight train).

The tunnel is now somewhat of an urban legend because of the giant icicles that develop during the winter months.

Here is a somewhat recent photo of the west portal of the tunnel:

  • The second train was the westbound "Twilight Limited"

  • @intercityrailpal Sweet. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • Great video, to bad there's no sound. Post more if you have it!!

  • @2005GLI There's no sound because these movies are silent (not sure if you or any of the viewers are aware of that). Unfortunately, I have no more, other than the half hour VHS tape this was on. However, when Wilson Jones passed away a year or so ago, a friend of mine got all his movies.

  • There must be a better term for something factual that happens in Byram NJ than "urban legend".

  • work has begun to restore the Lackawanna Cutoff to Andover...NJ...trains will be running through Roseville tunnel again in 2011

  • I wish I could have seen trains on the cutoff. I biked the whole thing from Port Morris to Route 94. It's a shame the reopening of the cutoff has gone through so much red tape. It's a shame the Viaducts are just rotting for no one to appreciate

  • this is great stuff!!!

  • Love to see old footage of Fallen flaggs like this. Great Stuff!

  • GREAT STUFF!!! Pre 1960 EL days!!!!
