Actually it is a good idea to test yourself out and see if this is really what you want to do first. It is hot dirty demanding work to fire and operate a steam locomotive. A coal fired locomotive is even more demanding and dirty.You must like Heat, Coal smoke, cinders, steam, valve oil, usually all at the same time. A operating steam locomotive demands attention ALL the time. Fireman tip #1 When stopped, don't open the doors without the blower on or you may have to jump out of the cab.
Also you don't want the engineer looking at your steam pressure all the time. It is not a good sign.

@Kleman09 True, After 10 hours of fireman on a coal fire, a hot shower and some clean clothes is really nice. (sleep too)
