I dive (dove Laguna beach MLPA : ( for nice sheaphead) usually don't have to go to far out to get them, just try to find reefs most divers to get to. Looks like you were pretty far out? What is depth of ocean, depth of reef and water temp. The reef I hit is about 100 yards out in 30 feet of water. but does not hit the surface. Good hidden reef, temp is about 60 F.

sheepshead are hard to knife! i had to club my last couple big ones in the 10-15# range

@abzde Yeah I read that in one of my dads old dive books from teh 70's. I've only come across one sheepshead in Monterey, I tried to spear him, even held my breath hiding behind a large rock to not give away my position or scare him off, then slowly crept over the rock to get a shot at him, but the bastard knew something was wrong and stayed JUST beyond spear range and then disappeared, they seem to be fairly intelligent and cautious.

@duanescot I don't know where that myth came from but sheephead doesn't taste anything like lobster.

nice, sheepshead are hard to sneak up on, how do they taste? I've heard they taste a bit like lobster, but Im a bit skeptical
