In August 1966, Egyptian Islamist thinker and writer Sayyid Qutb was convicted in Cairo of conspiring against the state.
The evidence used to incriminate him consisted primarily of extracts from his book Milestones. Qutb was executed in prison.
All known copies of the book were confiscated and burned by military order, and anyone found in possession of it was prosecuted for treason. This was on 29 August 1966.
In this edition of the show, we ask the following question: How could Britain ban books in the 21st century?
You can buy the banned book 'Milestones' on Amazon.co.uk if you like.
