The Bible doesn't say that baptism is for the purpose of public display. In fact, Jesus warned us not to make displays of our obedience. Baptism is a personal obedience issue; entering into the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. There were private baptisms in the book of Acts. And yes, the Word says it is part of the salvation experience. Compare everything you are taught with the whole Word of God.
