Building product and equipment manufacturers are on the front lines of both building information modeling (BIM) and digital prototyping. In this series Autodesk Technical Evangelist Rob Cohee where mechanical and architectural design intersect, and how they can play nicely together.

BIM and Digital Prototyping complement each other to the extent that the information required to create and relay architectural and engineering intent as well as manufacturing, construction, and assembly levels of detail occur as a matter of consequence, and not as a reinterpretation of intent at each phase of construction and manufacturing.

  • Lots off possibilities to share BIM data from the inventor model towards revit users.

But as I just want to send my shaft modeled in inventor as as a 3D DWG to my NC contractor, I can´t add any properties like material to the model.

Lots of people need to do this every day. Right now you have to ad this info in the body of the email when sending to the NC contractor. So critical information is not included in the model. Is there a work around somehow by using the AEC ( I don´t have Revit)

  • Material transfer is something that we are hearing more and more of. I'm interested in knowing why you are choosing 3D DWG instead of ADSK.

  • My contractors ask for DWG because this can be read ,the most easy ,trough there CAM systems.

An other isue is that I want in order to sell my products more easy, to provide architects with 3D dwg´s extracted of my IPT´s ( after adjusting the parameters according to the clients needs) of my products to easely fit this in their designs.

This 3D dwg is never documented , I can´t even connect or attach my company name.

If use AEC the data that I add will be only recognized in MEP and REVIT.

  • would love to see how to create something big like that! from start to finnish.
