Lyme disease sufferers and their families, ticked off at how the province is dealing with the disease, rallied at the Legislature today.
The group says the disease is not being properly diagnosed by Canadian doctors and as a result, is not being treated. The group says doctors aren't educated on the tick-borne illness that has symptoms including fever, headache, chills, fatigue and a bulls-eye rash at the site of a tick bite. Left untreated, it can progress to muscle and joint pain, heart palpitations and central nervous system disorders.
Former MLA David Cubberly, now with the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation, says the disease almost always goes undiagnosed forcing sick people to seek treatment in other countries. He accuses health officials of dismissing Lyme Disease they way medical professionals once dismissed AIDS.
Provincial Health Minister Kevin Falcon says doctors follow international guidelines for diagnosing and treating the disease.
Canada reports approximately 30 cases of Lyme disease every year. In addition to better diagnosis and treatment, people at todays rally would like the province to establish a stand-alone Lyme disease clinic. Lyme disease rallies also took place in Vancouver and Kelowna, and across the country.
