sarah liss, eye weekly "... the new project from ex-Organ frontwoman Katie Sketch. Mermaids is best described as an all-girl supergroup with Tobey Black and Maija Martin (formerly of VanCity Mint Records popsters The Gay) on drums and accordion respectively, as well as Lullabye Arkestra's Katia Taylor on powerhouse bass. It's still in the rudimentary stages, but their overall sound is mournful, lush art-pop, with ragged folk edges that stem from Martin's aching accordion and a guest violinist." (and guest back up vocals that night by Jennifer Castle [Castlemusic]).

Not to be a total geek fanboy, but 1), Katie Sketch is among the best contemporary indie musicians, and 2) she pulls off androgynous/sexy really, really well, to boot.

@yaldram5 I don't think Katie got on well with the people at the label, and they presumably made her sign a multi-album deal when they gave The Organ an advance. As I understand it, problems with the label making the band tour constantly created all the pressure that made the band split up. Katie doesn't want all that stress. Presumably she'd have to find another labl that could could buy her out of the old contract.
