Red Hot Salsa uses excerpted documentation of the artist dancing ceaselessly for 6 hours and 12 minutes to an instructional salsa video. The piece explores the relationship between endurance work and cultural identity in an exhaustive attempt to learn the trappings of one's own culture from a contrived and consumable teaching device. Here the American salsa dancing craze stands as metaphor for the misrepresentation of Latin Americans as culturally monolithic, resulting in a confusing struggle to conform. Red Hot Salsa is formatted to play looping on a television monitor. The full length of the piece is just ove r15 minutes.
