Student Success Task Force Los Angeles Town Hall Meeting

The value of a college education cannot be argued. Californians holding an associate or bachelor's degree are likely to earn $1 million more in their lifetime than a person who holds only a high school diploma.

California's economy depends on increasing the number of community college students who obtain job training certificates, degrees and transfer to four‐year universities. Countless Californians are turning to the community colleges for help at a time when state and federal resources are diminishing. Community colleges must prioritize the types of classes being offered, place an emphasis on increasing student persistence and graduation rates and get creative about helping students reach their educational goals on time.

A California Community Colleges Student Success Task Force was appointed by the board of governors in January 2011 to examine strategies and develop recommendations for promoting student success, including improving the student assessment process, delivering remedial instruction, increasing academic counseling, and using technology to help students reach their goals faster.

Chancellor Scott's executive team and members of the task force will address completion hurdles and discuss draft recommendations designed to help the California Community Colleges improve student achievement. The draft recommendations will be developed into a plan to be considered by the board of governors and subsequently presented to the Legislature no later than March 2012.

Prior to presenting recommendations to the board, the task force is facilitating discussions throughout the state and is looking for input from you.

Recommendation 4.1, Bullet 6, inadvertently and harmfully eliminates funding for well deserved programs, like the Acquired Brain Injury program that benefits our soldiers returning from war. I am writing this on Veterans' Day, 2011. Please preserve if not expand funding for this fiscally sound program. Moreover, I encourage senior citiizens and AARp mems. to contact your State Senators to protect Continuing Ed. funding. Education for senior citizens enriches, not harms, our local economies.
