At their highest point (at O'Brien's Tower), the vertical Cliffs of Moher on the coast of County Clare rise 214 m above the Atlantic. O'Brien's Tower has recently reopened, and offers a sweeping view of the cliffs and out to the Aran Islands and Galway Bay
An innovative, grass-roofed Visitor Centre, opened in 2007, is tucked into a hillside, and paved walkways from it lead to viewing areas along the edge of the cliffs. At the end of the walkways, a large sign announces "PLEASE DO NOT GO BEYOND THIS POINT" in English, French and German. However, many visitors join the crowd of walkers who proceed onwards past this sign, on a well-trodden dirt footpath towards Moher Tower on Nag's Head at the southern end of the cliffs. In places, this unpaved path is quite close to the edge of the cliffs ---- best avoided on a rainy, windy day.
