one of my favourite songs of all time produced by scratch ,
sang by sam carty
i found the original version some years ago and here it is ,first lee perrys version then the original by Naushad
(info)
Bird In Hand is actually a cover of a song from a 1950 Indian film
called "Babul" (dir. Raj Kapoor). The original song, written by
Naushad, is sung by Talat Mehmood and Shamshad Begum. If you want to
know what sam carty singing (check it out!), the original words are:

Milte hi aankhein dil hua deewana kissi ka (x2)
Afsana mera ban gaya afsana kissi ka
Puchho na mohabbat ka asar, haay na puchho
Dam bhara mein koyi ho gaya, parwaana kisika
Afsaana mera ban gaya, afsaana kisika

translated:
As soon as our eyes met, somebody's heart went mad
My tale has happened, somebody's tale
Don't ask me love's effect, oh, don't ask
I took a breath and somebody happened, somebody's lover

  • Great get the background on this 30 years after first hearing it on Scratch on the wire.

I sem to remember Earl16 saying that he was the vocalist on the Upsetter version. Also that the vocal recorded was longer than that released. I have always hoped that there was a full length Upsetter vocal version somewhere.

  • good to hear you found it :)

  • i'm pretty sure the vocalist is Sam Carty

  • yes it is SAM CARTY singing

  • Haha, great Lee Perry fan... I'm not surprised to find out the song isn't his.

  • One of the most brilliantly psychedelic songs ever, thanks for the background info. I was never sure what language it was sung in, or if it was just in English and Scratch had twisted it into outer space on his mixing desk!

  • Listen Mato Seco - Bird In Hand , Is Awesome,

But Lee Perry is Lee Perry!!!

    From Brazil !!!!

  • king of kings ! lord of lords ! bless Lee Perry & Sam Carty !

  • Lee Perry told us during filming of The Upsetter that Sam Carty came into the studio with a song he wanted to remake and started singing in Hindi. Lee didn't know what the lyrics meant but went with it. Sam did not speak Hindi but this was one of his favorite songs. They laid it over the riddim and it turned out magical. A great example of Lee's genius and his willingness to experiment.

  • So with the Lee Perry sauce it just transformed from a relatively ordinary Indian song to a master dub piece.

  • @MrVinceOwens where where where? I would love to hear that...

  • love black arc... perry produced this unique warm sound... bird in hand always reminded me of some mantra... now that i learnd that it has indian origins, i know why i had this feeling^^

  • @PWISLL This is a Hindi song from a bollywood movie of a bygone age. It is indeed very refreshing to hear the vocals sung to a scratch/dub background.
