HIERONYMUS BOSH was an Early Netherlandish painter of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The artist's work is well-known for the use of fantastic imagery to illustrate moral and religious concepts and narratives. Bosch produced several triptychs. Among his most famous is The Garden of Earthly Delights. This painting depicts paradise with Adam and Eve and many wondrous animals on the left panel, the earthly delights with numerous nude figures and tremendous fruit and birds on the middle panel, and hell with depictions of fantastic punishments of the various types of sinners on the right panel. When the exterior panels are closed the viewer can see, painted in grisaille, God creating the Earth. Bosch never dated his paintings and may have signed only some of them. Fewer than 25 paintings remain today that can be attributed to him. Philip II of Spain acquired many of Bosch's paintings after the painter's death; as a result, the Prado Museum in Madrid now owns several of his works, including The Garden of Earthly Delights.

  • 1:33

    That is all.

  • what does it all mean? what is the story? erotic, sure, but why all this?

    wonderful anyway . . .

  • Amazing - thanks for sharing

  • The face of the Tree Man makes my hair stand up.

  • Amazing art, the minutia of each individual character in this piece is intrincately painted, and could easily stand alone as a wonderfulpiece of art..Bosch was definately a visionary, it`s hard to believe when looking at this tryptic that it was painted circa early 1500`s. The little creature at 21sec to me,could be mistaken for a kangaroo, except for the ears, yet Australia wasn`t discovered by the rest of the world until mid 1500`s.

  • I am very proud that I am Dutch.

    A beautyful production
