UN Secretary-General Lauds Bangladesh's Achievement in Reducing Child and Maternal Mortality Rates
The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon visited Bangladesh in November last year. His trip included a visit to the Mobarakpur community centre in the north-east region of Moulvibazar district which serves expectant mothers and new-borns.
Established in 1999, this is a special government-led initiative to substantially increase the numbers of women who can give birth with a trained birth attendant. The project is supported by UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, as well as by DFID, the EU and the Canadian CIDA.
....... Gave birth to a healthy baby and she is happy with the service that she has received during delivery.
"This clinic is nearly 5/15 kilometres away from my home and I came here with my family as we all wanted to have a safe delivery and a healthy child."
Speaking at a 'courtyard meeting' with expectant mothers at Mobarakpur, a remote village of Moulvibazar District, on 15th November the UN Secretary-General said that the UN wants to showcase to the world Bangladesh's achievement in the field of child and maternal health.
"I am very impressed to see the remarkable achievement of Bangladesh government in reducing child and maternal mortality rates. The government is doing an excellent job," Mr. Ban Ki-moon said.
A key objective of his visit was to showcase the progress and leadership of Bangladesh in advancing women's and children's health in the context of the "Every Woman Every Child" effort he initiated in 2010.
