    Even though he got his hand in, does not mean he could just unlock the door, thats the whole point to this, to open it a crack to see who it is without unlocking the door, and to prevent person from pushing door open. The chain isn't long enough when opened that much, even if it's open a tiny bit where you can only fit paper thru the chain is too short, try it sometime. The door needs to be fully shut to get chain off.

    Not really. Have you never stayed in a hotel? You can't slide the chain over with the door open, that's why this works as you go to shut the door again.
