Welcome to Planet Patrol, brought to you by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. This month we're focusing on the bathroom and laundry room, and things you can do there to help the planet.

Water and energy conservation are the two biggest factors we can impact in our bathrooms and laundry rooms.

When you're drying your clothes, use the moisture sensor, if you have one. The moisture sensor on newer dryers stops the dryer when your clothes are dry. Then you're not over drying them and wasting energy. Dry like things together. Don't mix heavy things like towels with light weight tee shirts. Hanging clothes outside ONLY uses the sun's energy and your clothes don't wear out as fast there either.

On to the bathroom, first thing is to check the toilet. If yours is from 1992 or earlier, it's probably pretty inefficient. One easy way to fix the inefficiency, without replacing your toilet, is to put a brick or something similar in the tank to take up space. A bath uses about 70 gallons of water, but a 5 minute shower only uses 10 to 25 gallons. And of course, shut the water off while you're brushing your teeth.

Make your Eco-Story a good one by doing some of the things we've talked about today. Find out more about saving energy in your bathroom and laundry room, and check out the virtual tour of the Mobile Education Exhibit at http://www.iowadnr.gov/Environment/La....
