  • thats the throwout bearing my friend. Or pilot bearing

  • Your absolutly wrong...The pilot bearing does not spin when the clutch is engaged nor is the TB loaded when the clutch is engaged...its gear rattle dude...

  • clutch relase bearing tht is

  • No...it isnt...every bmw with a lightweight flywheel will have this sound...

  • The rattle is a result of the light weight flywheel. The mass of the flywheel does not dampen the engines power pulses to the transmission. The stock flywheel does, but not a 10lbs unit.

I posted this video for people concerned about the resulting rattle of an ltw flywheel installed.

My flyweel is fine and so is my clutch release fork, pivot pin, and t/o bearing.

The rattle can be cured with a mix ATF tranny fluid and gear oil according to UUC motorwerks.

  • I'm considering using a stock M20 single mass flywheel. Do all single mass flywheels chatter, or the lightweight ones?

  • im pretty sure thats the release bearing... if the sound starts when you push in the clutch

  • i know its normal and flywheel rattle but I sit down and think about it...its still weird as can be...

  • was it worth it?

  • i have an e46 m3 with a jbracing flywheel, does yours rattle when your foot is off the clutch, mine rattles when im idling, and under load for example if i shift in to 6th sooner then i need to i can hear a lil chatter....

  • LIsten to the original poster, he is spot on with his diagnosis. The lack of inertia from the fly wheel is causing the first motion shaft in the gearbox to bounce from pressure on one side of the gear teeth to the other at the right frequency to develop an unfortunate harmonic. probably no too damaging but long term fatigue may be an issue

  • Curious, which flywheel/clutch is that? I have E46 non m, and I'm looking at JB racing 10 lbs flywheel. I don't really care about the weight, more the fact that its a single mass flywheel... The clutch I'm looking at is clutchmasters stage 1 organic. All from bimmerworld. I don't want chatter really.
