@quazichimp: speaking as a trombonist, the "meat on the bone" metaphor couldn't be closer to the musical truth!
-thanks Neopachuco for posting this!

Love the photos from the Dogon tribe in Africa, too -- even including the allusions to what some say is their origin. They do interesting art and have an interesting heritage, regardless of where they come from.

One of the most memorable concerts of the many I have been fortunate to witness over a 40-year period was Julius' appearance at the Painted Bride in Philadelphia. It was not long before his passing, and he had already lost a leg to either cancer or diabetes(I don't recall which) That night,Julius played with as much soul, purpose, and conviction as anyone I have ever seen or heard, before or since. His courage and commitment will never be forgotten.

Masterpiece! Sounds as fresh, innovative, raw and just flat out amazing as it did when I first bought the album all those years ago.
Yes!....thanks so much for posting this.
I think Dogon A.D. and Coon Bid'ness were Hempill's
best works. The trudging repetitive drive
of Wadud's cello coupled with Hemphill's alto
is real meat on the bone jazz.

@quazichimp Couldn't agree more with the metaphor: "real meat on the bone jazz". Thanks for listening.

Thanks for posting this and keeping Julius Hemphill's music in motion. Had the album years ago and, for a period there, played this track until the grooves began to grumble.

@paganmaestro "Dogon A.D." and "Coon Bid'ness" where my favorite albums all along the seventies. I still have the latter in vinyl format (the Arista Freedom edition). Later, I enjoyed immensely all the World Saxophone Quartet albums I have heard. I consider Juluis Hemphill is one of the best jazz composers of all times.
