The Smart car from Mercedes-Benz is finally here in the U.S., after almost a decade of sales in Europe. The two-seater promised great gas mileage and easy parking. But it doesn't have a backseat or much room for luggage. But it's roomier than it looks for the driver and passenger. • @egibbys They advertise it as 8.7gal with a 1.3 reserve. Or in other words, the gauge will read "0" after 8.7 gallons had been used up. But for protection you have a good 1.3 gallons past the "0" so hopefully one will hit a station soon!

  • @Neonspinnazz30 Yes its very unfortunate that they aren't in the US. That is the one I would definitely get. Good to know that the tanks are 10 gallons. I was told they were extremely small, but 10 gallons will get you plenty far.

  • @egibbys Yep, older TDIs just murder the smart and hybrids...

They have a diesel smart, it gets 84 avg mpg (imp.) and on a recent cannonball run an owner got 96 mpg without hypermiling.

Only problem is that they won't import them to America!

The fuel tank in one is 10 gallons.

  • @Neonspinnazz30 With the new TDIs that is correct. I drive a 2000 Jetta TDI and it gets way better than the smart. Now if the smart was a diesel and I know they can be, there would be no competition at all. Only downside is the smart has such a small tank that it has to be filled up quite often. I go 750 miles between fill ups.

  • @Neonspinnazz30 Sorry what? 2 years since i wrote what i did!

  • @egibbys EPA ratings for TDI cars are actually lower than the fortwo

  • @D41H4T5U Uh huh...sure it does...

  • You forgot Volkswagens TDI cars. They have great fuel economy and way more power than any hybrid. I love smart cars and will probably own one some day but my Jetta TDI is the best car I have ever owned. Best mpg I have every gotten was 51.6

  • I heard rumors that the new fiat 500 is going to the states too? If it's true, you're in for a right treat! they are simply stunning litlle cars and if you get the diesel engine, expect up to 78 MPG ( same engine as in my Panda). Even the 1.2 petrol does around 60 MPG. I'm currently saving up for one now :)

I think the US government seriously needs to consider importing higher MPG cars, lets face it GM and Ford are never going to manufacture a car that does anything above 55 MPG!

  • The MPG for this car are not very good at all. My Fiat Panda does 78 MPG highway and that has a 1.3 turbo diesel engine and also 4 doors, 4 seats, a big boot and is very comfortable.
