Tipiṭaka Technology Lecture at the University of Tokyo was organised by the World Tipiṭaka Council of Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Japan on September 13, 2008.
This special lecture was one of the academic activities organised as part of the World Tipiṭaka presentation to the University of Japan by Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn of Thailand.
Over a century ago, Princess Chulabhorn's Great-Grand Father, King Chulachomklao of Siam, presented the world's first printed set of Pāḷi Tipiṭaka, then in 39 volumes, as royal gifts to 30 institutions in Japan, including the University of Tokyo. The royal gift was organised by the Foreign Ministry of Siam and they were sent to Japan by sea.
The Tipiṭaka Technology Lecture focused on the role of modern international technology which helps to preserve, distribute and study the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka, through various open-standard media, the first time that Tipiṭaka has been presented in a scientific and technology community.
His Imperial Highness Prince Akishino of Japan and Her Highness Princess Chulabhorn presided over the commemorative lecture which was attended by Thai and Japanese students as well as leaders from academic and business community in Tokyo.
For the 2008 World Tipiṭaka Presentation in Japan, the royal gifts were specially transported by an air craft of the Royal Thai Air Force's special flight to Osaka where the royal presentation ceremony was held.
