Recently Oprah Winfrey has stated that at her age, she has become more and more aware of the health issues of older women. In one of several shows dedicated to women's health issues, Oprah Winfrey hosted the author of the insightful book The Wisdom of Menopause by Dr. Christine Northrop. Dr. Northrop encourages women to learn to enjoy life again by doing at least 5 things that they enjoy doing. She makes the valid point that stress, to excess, can make us sick. Excess stress can alter both the immune system and the body's inflammatory system. As stress mounts, people find themselves with chronic fatigue, memory problems, and increased incidence of colds, flu and other contagious conditions as a result of a depressed immune system. While Dr Christine Northrop places emphasis on the mind/body connection, which we wholeheartedly agree with, here at The Institute, we address the effects of stress, anxiety and depression on the physiology of the body. In addition to immune suppression, excess stress also increases overall inflammation in the body. Called silent inflammation, this can be the most dangerous of all inflammatory conditions because it can go unnoticed for years. Silent inflammation is at the root of such conditions as low thyroid, heart disease, candida, stress, osteoporosis, elevated cholesterol and other liver related issues, diabetes, and the complications of the menopause. Oprah Winfrey spoke highly of Dr. Northrop's book, The Wisdom of Menopause and we would like to take this one step further by looking at the biochemical connections that take place as we age. The Institute has highly effective programs for both the prevention and management of many of the leading chronic conditions common to women as they age. Our programs include protocols for under-active thyroid -- affecting one out of three women, heart disease -- the number one killer of women, osteoporosis, stress management through nutrition, candida and yeast problems, elevated cholesterol and complications of the menopause. Chronic degenerative disease does not have to be in your future. You can live a full, healthy life, filled with the pleasures that bountiful health can bring. You cannot, however, expect to accomplish this without supporting your body as it ages. Protecting the body from the ravages of excess stress and exposure to increasing environmental toxins is essential if we expect to enjoy a higher quality of life ahead. The Institute has programs specifically designed to help you achieve these goals in a safe, convenient and economical way. Feel free to contact us for further information and a discussion of your individual needs. Oprah Winfrey has discovered that caring and protecting the body as it ages is important -- we think so too.
I'm currently a student at the University of Cape Town embarking on my first year of postgrad studies in Psychology (my main interests lie in neuro and health psychology) - the thing is, I really want to do an internship somewhere after I'm done with my studies. South Africa does not even register Neuropsychologists.. I realise this is a very random platform, but any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated. If I could just shadow someone for a year or two, learn. I'm starved for experience!
