Earthquake in Guatemala kills one in landslide

Two earthquakes struck southern Guatemala on Monday, shaking buildings in the capital city and killing one person in a landslide.
The quakes struck near Guatemala's southwestern coast in the sugar cane-growing region around Santa Rosa.
"There is one dead in Cuilapa, Santa Rosa due to a landslide caused by the quake. Another house in Santa Rosa collapsed as well," said Erick Sarias from Guatemala's volunteer fire department.
An initial quake of 4.8 magnitude was followed about half an hour later by a second of 5.8 magnitude, the US Geological Survey said. The epicenter of the larger quake was about 16 miles (26 km) southeast of Cuilapa and had a depth of 25 miles (40 km), the survey said. It shook buildings in Guatemala City, about 33 miles (52 km) away.

SINGTAM (SIKKIM)/GANGTOK: Rescuers battled heavy rains and cleared dozens of landslides while making their way to Sikkim, the ground zero of Sunday evening's 6.8 magnitude earthquake that has so far claimed 74 lives across three countries - India, Nepal and China (Tibet).

According to late-night reports, at least 58 people were killed and hundreds injured in Sikkim, Bengal and Bihar, in addition to nine deaths in Nepal and seven in Tibet. The toll is likely to rise, say rescuers. In Sikkim, the toll had reached 41. The maximum casualties have been in Rangpo, Dikchu, Singtam and Chungthang in north Sikkim. Ten persons have died in Bengal and seven in Bihar.

TOI reached some of the worst-affected areas, following rescue convoys as they battled impossible odds. Every now and then progress was halted by massive landslides. Virtually nothing is left intact on the 100-km Gangtok-Chungthang road. NH-31A, the highway to Gangtok, was cleared by late afternoon. Roads and bridges between Meeli and Namchi in south Sikkim and Rawangla in west Sikkim have been severely damaged. Tourists have been warned not to venture beyond Gangtok.

Wrong, not standard. If you survey quake data every fucking day against your will you'll know that Guatemala isn't a complete rarity, but with increased activity comes sensible warning. In the past 2 and half hours there have been 4 quakes in same spot of Guatemala. 4.8 then 5.8 then 4.8 then 4.5. Nothing on Guatemala for more than a week, two it seems. Stop ripping on those who are analyzing data, opinions are needed because the media shuns a lot of details of quakes.

Believersunderground Scott, is not weird. If he couldn't back his theory with fact, the USGS would not have given him a grant. Scott's own theory is that with the post glacier rebound affect, land is sinking.

is totally unkown by phyicists who have been studying most of their lives. Do you really think that a few thousend youtube posters know more? Or is it more likely they simply re-post whatever else they find that reinforces their pre-conceived paranioa? The first rule of ANY science is be sceptical until it's proven beyond ANY doubt. It's just misguided on youtube..it isn't serious science.

@nyverone It isn't even a coincidence. In the same way that (for example) twenty thousend elephants mating in Africa at the same time would have no effect on earthquake activity. Comets are just dust/small rocks and mainly gas (the bit you can see). No-one suggested that Haleys comet would have any effect on Earth, why is this one supposedly any different? It's alegedly coming within (if it gets that far) 22 MILLION miles from us. a thing the size of perhaps half our moon (if that) mainly gas.

@uspimpclub I just couldn't carry on subbing him. I didn't do a thing against him, nor would I. I just couldn't take that nonsense anymore. He doesn't even have his own personal situation together and he seemed very, very mentally ill to me. That's how I feel. There's this lady on YouTube who is practically foaming at the mouth. Good thing she blocked me long ago. I feel sorry for her kids.
