Neil shooting the Beaumont M71/88 Rifle (Netherlands)

This is a Netherlands Beaumont M71/88 rifle. It was adopted in 1871 as a single shot and modified after 1888 with the addition of the Vitali magazine system. It is chambered for an 11mm cartridge which holds 77 grains of black powder. This one was built in 1874 in Maastricht. For more info, see: http://www.militaryrifles.com/Holland/BmontVit.htm

I'm guessing the box on the bottom of the rifle is its magazine?

That is the Vitali magazine. It holds 4 rounds in a single column, retained by two spring loaded fingers at the top. It is powered by a round coil spring and works very well. The rifles were originally single shot and were coverted beginning in 1888 to repeaters.

I love this gun...I have one myself...family legend is that i was used by a relative in the Spanish-American war still has the cleaning rod and bayonet...i would love to fire it but cant seem to find ammo

@nschrock273 You can get brass from Buffalo Arms or Ballard Rifle Co. Both are very good quality. Use .458 diameter bullets and load data for Trapdoor Springfield. CH Tool makes dies, or make your own by modifying .45-70 dies, as I did.

It's not realy a 100 % Dutch gun, the moste major components are made in Belgium!

I inherited my Grandfathers DUTCH BEAUMONT MODEL 1871/88 RIFLE. He got it from his father who revived the rifle as payment for some odd job. For the longest time we did not know what type of gun it was but using the power of the internet and marking's on the weapon we finally found out. Its in bad condition sadly with no cleaning rod. The metal has lost its shine years before my birth. The inside of the barrel is scared and the striker spring had broken.

The Rifle itself has not been fired since before it was given to my great grandfather and will probably never fire again. The Rifle fell to my grandfather when he was young and he would take it out in the back fields and woods where he grew up to play. During WWII my grandfather (still a boy) reports that this gun killed more enemy solders than any gun in the war without leaving the States, and never missed.

I hope to someday own or at least fire a working model. Even thought its not in top condition and not in working condition this gut is priceless to me and i cherish it above most of my worldly possessions.
