(June 4)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] United Airlines is cutting as many as 1,100 more jobs, grounding its entire fleet of B737s and slashing domestic capacity as it tries to cope with spiraling fuel prices.The positions - which will be eliminated by the end of the year - are an increase to the 500 previously announced job reductions. The cuts will target salaried, contract and management employees. Combined, the reductions total nearly 3 percent of its 55,000 workers worldwide. Unprecedented spikes in fuel costs have now forced the nation's No. 2 carrier to ground ninety-four 737s as well as six 747s _ the company's oldest and least fuel-efficient planes. Mainline domestic capacity will also be cut by as much as 18 percent in 2009, while international capacity will be scaled back as much as 5 percent.United is not alone with its struggles in the face of record-high fuel prices American Airlines announced last month that it would cut workers and slash its domestic flight capacity by up to 12 percent in the fourth quarter. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****)
