They do a similar thing in Van Canto, an acapella metal band, where for the "solos" they just have a guy sing some head voice riffs while throwing in some distortion on his voice. Definitely worth checking out.

@tomorocko well, there are others that can do this as well - Michael Winslow and the dude from Naturally 7 and more. I just think that it's simply not worth it to "fake" something like this...there just wouldn't be any point. That being said, it's pretty amazing...
