CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE (2010) - Christopher Lennertz - Soundtrack Suite

On CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE, Christopher Lennertz picks up where John Debney left off and revisits the style of theming that make spy films great. However, his approach is not as fully tongue-in-cheek as Debney's score for the first film was.
Being a family film, Lennertz had to play it a little loose, simultaneously parodying and paying homage to the conventional tones of popular spy movies - boisterous, bold brass, crashing percussion, and short-bursting, startling, tidal swells. During the course of the score, he runs the gamut of the genre's history, from the James Bond series, the Bourne films, Mission Impossible, The Saint, and The Avengers. But there is also a nod to Debney's gentle sense of adventure that ties it all together and holds your attention.
The thing that really stands out about the CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE score is that if you are not actively aware that this was the score for a children's movie about cat vs. dog spy organizations, I don't think you ever would realize it. The quality and performance of the compositions and musicianship elevates the score beyond the confines of fluffy, kid stuff.
And I think that is what I enjoyed most about this score. It almost seems like Lennertz injected a quality into the music that would cause children to take an interest in movie scores. It has a breezy lightness to it that tickles the ear, but it also bears the traits of several styles of music, as though Lennertz was playing the role of The Pied Piper.
Serious score buffs might scoff at this score and pass it off as a pedestrian or even sarcastic piece of music, but I truly believe there is something pure and exciting going on beneath the surface of Lennertz' work.
