...matt despain and ricky wasson broke my heart with their singing: the rock, salt and nails tears overwhelmed me and my canon camera got shaky in my rocky hands. And I, too, felt too lonesome to cry, I needed someone to share my salty feelings (because the woman I love she's not here today, she was like a rock). (moiTuby) I don't even know now who does it better: Vince Gill or Ricky Wasson?!

Rock Salt And Nails On the banks of the river where the willows hang down
And the wild birds all warble with a low moaning sound
Down in the hollow where the waters run cold
It was there I first listened to the lies that you told

Now I lie on my bed and I see your sweet face
The past I remember time cannot erase
The letter you wrote me it was written in shame
And I know that your conscience still echo's my name

Now the nights are so long, Lord sorrow runs deep
And nothing is worse than a night without sleep
I'll walk out alone and look at the sky
Too empty to sing, too lonesome to cry

If the ladies were blackbirds and the ladies were thrushes
I'd lie there for hours in the chilly cold marshes
If the ladies were squirrels with high bushy tails
I'd fill up my shotgun with rock salt and nails

  • Rock Salt And Nails? How can you prove it? Well, maybe you right ... and here are the words of wisdom:

If the ladies were blackbirds and the ladies were thrushes

I'd lie there for hours in the chilly cold marshes

If the ladies were squirrels with high bushy tails

I'd fill up my shotgun with rock salt and nails

  • I remember this song as a child. My father and his band played this, it was so amazing I still love this song......amazing job.

  • Ricky Wasson!!

  • NOTHING, I mean NOTHING beats Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, J.D. Crowe, Flux, and Bobby Slone's Version!!!

  • Give credit where it is due. Utah Philips wrote the song and recorded it with Gram Parsons, Gene Clark and James Burton in 1969. Utah was in Korea where he well may have received a Dear John letter which would account for his behaviour when he came back.

  • great video, Thanks for posting it.

Many of Bluegrassers have played this tune, Rock Salt and nails, but it was wrote by Utah Phillips, he received the dear John letter on a ship coming home from the war. I love to do this song myself. JD Crowe still kick grass! Sing it Ricky

  • Lester Flatt also did the song long ago.
