It is not a silly experiment. It shows that magnesium is a powerful reductant. Mg can burn in pure N2 and rips the oxygen away from CO2, as shown here.

Burns in it, but dry ice is solid co2 which displaces o2, so it is kind of a silly experiment unless you want to weld out in space. lol
