For those used to the original London recording, here's a musical number not heard on the CD that is present during the full stage performance. It's part of the dress rehearsal of Hannibal, sung by Piangi, Carlotta, and chorus. For those that have seen the movie version of Phantom of the Opera, you should recognize part of this, but here is a version actually sung by decent singers. Carlotta and Piangi are supposed to be the Opera House's current best singers, so why they sound so awful in the movie version is beyond me. They didn't spend enough time casting correctly for the movie at all, for any of the actors. They're all bad.

So, from the original Canadian cast, here is Peter Cormican (Piangi) and Lyse Guérin (Carlotta.)

Lyrics:

Chorus:
With feasting and dancing and song
Tonight in celebration
We greet the victorious throng
Returned to bring salvation

The trumpets of Carthage resound
Hear, Romans, now and tremble
Hark to our step on the ground
Hear the drums - Hannibal comes

Piangi:
Sad to return to find the land we love
Threatened once more by Rome's far-reaching grasp
Tomorrow we shall break the chains of Rome
Tonight rejoice, your army has come home

Carlotta:
Once more to my welcoming arms
My love returns in splendor

Piangi:
Once more to those sweetest of charms
My heart and soul surrender

Chorus:
The trumpeting elephants sound
Hear, Romans, now and tremble
Hark to their step on the ground
Hear the drums - Hannibal comes

  • You just can't beat a broadway production... I was initially excited when the movie came out, but not anymore - now whenever I need a phantom fix I listen to the OST.

Even though Emmy Rosum is supposed to be a Opera singer in real life, she's pitchy (the aria - OMG) and has little expression.

And Gerard Butler? please. He was cast for looks (ironic, as he's playing the PHANTOM) and he had to *learn* how to sing...

The whole movie makes me twitch.

    Erik is not pleased.
