Prabodh Chandra Dey (born 1 May 1919), better known by his nickname Manna Dey, is one of the greatest playback singers in Hindi and Bengali films. He has recorded more than 3500 songs over the course of his career. Along with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, he dominated Indian film playback music from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Dey was born to Purna Chandra (father) and Mahamaya Dey (mother)on 1 May 1919. Besides his parents, his youngest paternal uncle Sangeetacharya (meaning "Venerable Teacher of Music" in Sanskrit) K. C. Dey highly inspired and influenced him. Dey received his early education in a small pre-primary school named Indu Babur Pathshala. Thereafter he attended Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College, followed by Vidyasagar College where he received his graduate education. From his childhood Dey has pursued wrestling and boxing.

Dey started his career in playback singing with the movie, Tamanna, in 1943. The musical score was by Krishna Chandra Dey and Manna sang a duet with Suraiya. The song was an instant hit. He sang a solo penned by Sachal Dev Burman, Upar Gagan Vishal, in the 1950 movie, Mashal. In 1952, Dey sang for a Bengali and a Marathi movie with the same name and storyline, Amar Bhupali. This established him as a leading playback singer.

  • Dattaram was right hand man for Shankar Jaikishan and produced some of the best tunes for them. His contribution to their compostions is well understood. In fact it will be often hard to guess between their melodies. What an era was that when we learnt to appreciate the movie music! Thanks Yuan.

  • @nandu1f - You are most welcome, my dear friend Nandu.

  • @nandu1f Yuan, your contribution to spreading the immportal musical heritage of Bollywood is as great as the contribution of the masters themselves. For someone who describes himself as ignorant of Hindi, your devotion to Hindi music is the stuff legends are made of.

    Hats off to you!

  • @chitta64 - My dear friend, you may have seen that usually I try to reply/acknowledge all the comments where necessary but I really do not know how to do it HERE where you have written extremely kind words.

So I would like to say the ultimate! MAY GOD BLESS YOU!

With regard to the music we are sharing/enjoying, in my opinion, HINDUSTANI MUSIC IS THE BEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD.

This is my small way of sharing/spreading it among our friendly music lovers.

Thank you again and take care.

  • Love your golden collection of songs. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to hear them.

  • Manna Dey and Lata has sung some of most beautiful duets of hindi cinema music, both extreamly talented. It is one of such songs. It is loss to indian filmi music that manna dey was not used to his potential and was limited to classical songs

  • @juneg1964 - You are a very special person, my dear friend Dr. Arjun.

For a long time, you have been encouraging me and admiring songs posted by me and I can easily mention here that you ARE a "life line" to an uploader like me and many others too.

THIS is what we "get" for our work and it is more than enough, I must say.

May God bless you, my dear friend.

  • Sometimes when you search in the forests we find the rarest gems. This is one of them, I did not mean rest of them are forests but when you get bored and you listen to certain songs you fell rejuvenated this is one of them. Thanks you so much for doing what you do dear Yuan.
