One could replace her with any with modern political ambitions from the west friendly modernist like Shah to the left wing Marxist modernist. They all underestimated the power of reactionary forces and lost their power and lives.
Or you could just ignore my analyze and enjoy the show. I never had a chance to tell Mary I was in love with her and know she is in LA and I am sitting here in Oslo watching her cry.

The third level is the political one. Mary is a symbol for modern streams in an old culture trying to invigorate and refresh it by bringing some modern element to it. But the man is the symbol of the old culture convenient with is way. The girl underestimated the inertia and reluctance of the traditional patterns and is forced to leave the scene.

I discover different levels in it the more I watch it just like Persian poetry.
One level might be the gender level ,the girl has a flexible body and mind but the man is rigid, conservative and afraid to learn new movements. The girl knows that the notes may be different but there are things you could share with new movements and old ones. The man knows it as well but uses that knowledge in a very opportunistic way to step backward into his rigid but convenient pattern of life.

This is from a time when metaphoric communication was very popular.Back then I was 17 and a Marxist and in low with Mary Apic.Never met her but as sitting in her public. We have women with fire in them like Fourough Farokhzad and Mary is one of them.
These were some tens of artists who inject vitality and fire into the lifeless body of Iranian society. Do not forget that the country was in an intellectual crisis after the clash of political ambitions in 1332(1954).
