That winter, I went from Antwerp to St John, NB on the Port Nicholson with hatches full of tractors. By the time we got to St John, we had hatches full of scrap!

They should have watched this video years ago, took far too long for Science to acknowledge that freak waves were quite common and not just old sailors tales.
Shame it took until the Drapner oil rig wave on 1/1/95 for them to realise. I would reccmmend anyone interested in this subject to type in freak wave and watch the 5 part BBC documentary on youtube.

There were several ships in big trouble or sinking during this storm. Was one of the worst I can remember.

Not too sure the country of registration...
There is something extremely scary of being in a severe storm/hurricane with mountainous seas...
Perhaps the feeling of one's own mortality and the knowledge that just one more pitch and we would go down the wave and not overcome the next crest...
It is terrifying when you are sustaining freak wave conditions and obliged to order maximum power on engines as your ship is hove to in mountainous seas...

As far as I can remember the helicopter was a German one . We were in radio contact with the pilot on VHF.
