I'm sorry, but watching Mike Love talking fondly about the themes and lyrics of SMiLE is painful at best. Let it go Mike, you weren't insightful enough to see something incredible unfolding in front of your eyes in 67, please stop attempting to piggy back off of it's brilliance now that the rest of the world is rightly enjoying it's beauty and magnificence. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to forgive you stopping an astonishing writing partnership flourishing to it's true potential.

@scyone I'm tired of the ML bashing, too. He's a human being, entitled to his opinions. Brian is IMHO a genius, but he's not God. Let's just be thankful we have this won-won-wonderful album/cd/box set in 2011 to entertain us - and future generations, as well.

Mike Love would still be working in the gas station if it were not for Brian Wilson. Yeah, he did contribute lyrically to a few tunes, but it was Brian who had the vision. Mike lost me forever with that assinine stunt he pulled at a record convention concert; nearly pushing the gran piano offstage - with Brian behind it. Then there was his infamous bash the Rolling Stones speech at the Grammy's......

@cranie4 I'm not gonna compare Love to Landy. Landy did help bring Brian back to physical health; he also controlled him and treated him like a cash cow. Landy is dead, Brian is still with us, he's created some won-won-wonderful music in recent years (TLOS is my fav), it will be interesting to see what he and the remaining BB's come up with.

@ronfowlermusic Putting Mike in a positive light is like putting Eugene Landy in a positive light. Yes they did some good things..but they did a lot more bad.

@cranie4 people seem to have this need to turn other people into "gods" or "demons". Brian is not God, and he'd be the first person to tell you that. Mike is not Satan. If I had to choose between the two, yeah, I'd pick Brian, because he's a musical genius, and he sang so beautifully when he was young. Mike's contributions should not be ignored, though - writing the lyrics of most of their classics, and being the lead voice on many of them.

@mombus In my opinion Carl kept the beach boys going from late 67 until he passed away. After that the band fell apart and since then the bb was nothing but a cover band.

@thefabulousmrj I agree, the only reason he talks so fondly of the sessions and songs is because smile is great music. I really hate listening to Love talk about those days.

Are you all kidding about Mike Love? They had some fights. Brian WIlson had fried his f*cking brain to hell and Mike Love take all the sht for breaking them up? Give me a break. Brian Wilson drove himself to the brink of death and a vegetable state. Mike Love was a musical god in his own right. He has composed plenty of brilliant songs. He is also hysterical and his a great stage presence. The Beach Boys wouldn't have been half of what they were without him. They're all awesome.

@thefabulousmrj , I couldn't have said it better! Mike Love is a stupid douche. He outta kiss Brians ass for making him rich. Mike could harmonize, but was a horrible lead vocalist. Not to mention his lame stage presense...
