In the early part of 2003, singer Johnny Paycheck was very sick, and struggling to pay bills, so Owen Bly, manager of the band Red Meat decided to organize a little fundraiser in San Francisco as a way of paying tribute to this great musician. A lot of musicians agreed to be part of this event, including Dave Alvin, Chris Gaffney, Dave Gonzales, and a handful of other musicians, including Red Meat, who received a bit of extra attention for being prominently featured in the soundtrack of the movie "Monster's Ball" starring Haile Berry.

Right as the fundraiser was coming together, Johnny Paycheck died, so the event was transformed into a tribute to honor his legacy. On the day of the show at the Elbo Room, March 19, 2003, by some coincidence, the invasion of Iraq began, and the streets of San Francisco were filled with people protesting the war.

This is a performance of the song "The Girl They Talk About" by Red Meat, with lead vocals by Scott Young.

Originally, I planned on filming this show with three cameras, but a freak accident destroyed one of the cameras. As the video was produced without any outside funding, I decided to put this project aside, and deal with it all later. This little video is an excerpt from the project, which I may be revived at a future date if there's enough interest.

In the meantime, if you enjoyed watching this video, and you haven't heard of Red Meat before, you really should do yourself a favor and check them out. They have a lot excellent original musical compositions. Their website is:

Elsewhere on YouTube, you can see a video that I shot of Red Meat performing with rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson.

enjoy!

  • whats the camera guy have against the steel player?

  • I had NOTHING against the steel guitar player. If you would read the description, you would have discovered that I planned to shoot the event with 3 cameras, but a freak accident destroyed one of the cameras.

This is not the ideal video of this performance, but it's the ONLY video of this performance.

I share it for FREE because I love the music, and hope others will enjoy it.

  • I wrote the song back in early 60's for Johnny Paycheck on Little Darlin' Records. One of 4 on his session. I toured with him in'66 on the first Charley Pride tour in Montana. He had a great band. Karen Kelly-Allsup

  • This rules. Including the ska guitar that's kinda going on.

  • Early Johnny Paycheck can really reel you in. There's a lot of knockout country from the 50s/60s/70s that you can use this as a springboard to explore. If you can find it, check out a Paycheck CD called "The Real Mr. Heartache -- the Little Darlin' Years". This song is from that album, and every song on there is a damn masterpiece.

  • i'm not into country too much, but i always liked this style of music and this song encouraged me to get into country music more
