Of course its Clapton.
Watch Martin Scorsese's Living in the Material World, Clapton talks candidly about playing this solo. And yes, George invited Eric to play it without the knowledge of the other Beatles, and John was delighted. John was quite willing to make Clapton a Beatle.

@TheAlexanest Eric just does the solo....

@MissDiorCherie333 clapton talks about it in his book, it is true

*cough cough* just because it's wikipedia doesn't mean it's true....

@Thilindel Dude, thanks for the shout out, but even wikipedia knows Clapton played the solo.
Clapton and Harrison were good friends and Harrison asked him to play the lead on this tune. Clapton could not get credit because of label issues. Besides, have you listened to the solo??? Totally Clapton kids.

@naomichigan74 Wow, how can someone be so utterly ignorant? The Clap NEVER played in the Beatles. Jesus christ...
George: I think we should have a guest musician play the lead on this song.
John: A what? What's a guest musician?
George: I've asked my friend Eric here to play the lead parts on this tune.
Paul: But George, you play all the leads in this band. Well, except for that kick-ass solo on Taxman. I played that one didn't I?
Eric: Nice to meet you blokes. I'm a big fan.
(Clapton picks up George's guitar and plugs in)
Ringo: (whimpers) But George, he's not a Beatle...
