Every June in São Luis, the capital of the State of Maranhão in northeastern Brazil, not too far south of the Equator, takes place the Bumba Meu-Boi festival. At number of town stages and squares perform dozens of folk dance groups from throughout the state, which prepare their performances for many months prior to the festival. The following video is a re-enactment of a wedding party through folk dance. The fast rhythm and length of the dance is amazing, taking nearly 45 minutes non-stop. While the group dancers wear peasant attire the groom and his wife wear their wedding best. When the dance finished the groom's three-piece suit was totally wet, as the temperatures in Sao Luis stay in the 90s and humidity is high. While all of the dancers are young people in their 20s, astounding performance is delivered by the dance group leader and coach, an older gentlemen. Not only that he directs the movements of the whole group he also sets and keeps the pace of the performance from the beginning to the end, mingling throughout the group overlooking his members, prompting them on when they seem to slacken at time.
