@0863357182 He was, however, a British citizen, and was therefore hanged for treason, haviong aided the enemy in time of war. He needed to be a british Citizen to have ever joined the British Union of Fascists. His Father applied for, and was granted, British citizenship for himself and his family, when Joyce wanted to enrol for British Army Officer training School in London, in 1922.

Joyce was born in New York and was a US citizen until 1941 when he was granted German citizenship.
He was NEVER a British ciitizen but lied to get a passport to travel to Germany in the mid-1930's and that was his death sentence.
He was a nasty fascist anti-semite but was was actually hanged for the wrong crime!

Yes, he was born American, but he moved back to the UK. When he was being tried for treason, he argued that because he was born American, there was no way that he could have been a traitor to England. His argument was rejected when a prosecutor successfully argued that the treacherous bastard had a British passport and, therefore, his neck belonged to England. And so it did :-)
