Shia Matam children.

An innocent shi'ite child has been brainwashed into Matam.

It was after all the invitations and assurances of support from the Shia of Kufa that encouraged Hussain (رضّى الله عنه) to abandon the safety of Mecca for Kufa. But once again faithfulness, courage and commitment was found lacking in the Shia of Kufa. Only a handful emerged to join Hussain (رضّى الله عنه) at Karbala. Hussain (رضّى الله عنه) would comment:

"Our Shia have deserted us."

The Shia of Kufa outnumbered Yezid's men 18,000 to 4,000. Actually, the number was greater than 18,000; 18,000 was simply the number of men who had pledged Bayat (oath of allegiance) to protect Hussain (رضّى الله عنه). Had they wanted to, the Shia of Kufa could have defeated Yezid's men and protected Hussain (رضّى الله عنه). But instead, they did nothing but watch from afar with cowardice. The Shia of today will eulogize this day and talk about how 71 men fought against 4,000 of Yezid's troops. Where did the other 18,000 go?

Al-Tawwabun (The Penitents)

Four years after the massacre of Karbala, the Shia of Kufa attempted to make ammends for their desertion of Hussain (رضّى الله عنه). They called themselves the Al-Tawwabun, which translates to "the Penitents." This group went to Karbala to comemmorate Hussain (رضّى الله عنه), and here it was that they began Matam, with loud mourning, lamenting, and self-flagellation. These Tawwabun hit themselves to punish themselves for the cowardice that they had shown that led to their Imam's death just four years earlier. This is the origin of the Shia ritual of Matam. It is altogether amusing how the Shia never really wonder where this barbaric custom started from or why it started in the first place. Little do they know that it is a testament to this day of how they killed their own Imam, and how their whole religion is centered around a false commitment to the Ahlel Bayt.

@MSH786: I judge people by what our prophet taught and then by how I see the people practice it. Many shia don't even pray along side Sunni Muslims, even though we did have some shia friends who did pray along side us. Plus, more Shia agree with the practice of self-flagellating than those that don't. I don't believe everything every sheik tells me without doing a little research and study myself. And I have long come to the conclusion that shiasm cannot be proper Islam.

@Imadeyourun I mean, if you really want to find out about Shia Islam, the best thing to do is go to Shia Muslims and ask them directly or read the books written by Shia scholars and not blindly believe what a Sunni says about Shias without any proof whatsoever because that just creates a fitna or separation and lack of understanding between Muslims.

I mean I can't speak for every single Shia in the world, but I and the vast majority of Shia Muslims in the world do not practice shirk, as we only pray to Allah (SWT). I think your problem is that you blindly follow and believe everything thing that some specific Sunnis/Wahhabis/Salafis say about Shias, which are purely lies and misconceptions about Shias.

@Imadeyourun Plus I should know more about it than you because I am Shia myself and I go to a Shia Mosque, in which I've witnessed with my own eyes a very small group of people self-flagellating, but the vast majority of my congregation do not, including myself because I myself oppose self-flagellation, but we do regular matam instead.

@Imadeyourun Actually, you're absolutely wrong, but I don't blame you because you're simply ignorant about this topic and if you see a small group of Shias self-flagellate in commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them both) you automatically assume that all Shias do the same, but nothing could be further from the truth!

@MSH786: Actually the vast majority of shia DO in fact practice the satanic ritual of cutting oneself in order to bring forth gushing blood. The shia that don't practice it are a very small minority. Your Taqqiya will not work on me buddy.
