Lamanai (meaning submerged crocodile) was once a considerably sized city of the Maya civilization, located in the north of Belize, in Orange Walk District.

To get to Lamani, we took a 20 minute flight from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye to Belize City. From Belize City, we were driven for about 1 hour to the town of Orange Walk where we boarded the boat. The boat-ride took us deep into some of the thickest parts of the Belizean jungle. We saw many species of birds and several monkeys but we didn't see any crocodiles as the weather was too cloudy and cool (only 75 degrees ;-)

The further up the river you travel the more narrow it gets. The foliage also gets more and more dense and at times, the trees above provide plenty of shade. After about an hour, the river opened up into a huge lagoon, and there it stood, as if rising out of the water above the palm trees, Lamanai!
