HD video of the freight train derailment on the King Edward Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne.

The train, hauled by EWS 66237, left the tracks on Thursday 10 May 2007 at 0639 BST.

The coal train was formed from 39 empty HAA wagons returning from the Drax Power station in North Yorkshire.

A Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) report found the immediate cause to be a combination of a minor track defect and a distorted wagon frame.

The RAIB recommended a number of changes to avoid repeat incidents.

These included amending the design and maintenance of the track and procedures to detect defective wagons on the network.

  • Great footage Ian- as good as, if not better, than Tyne-Tees news this evening. The reporter referred to the derailled "carriages". Ho hum.

Did anything leave the station via the High level and proceed south?

  • The damage to the track meant the only way in and out of Newcastle to London was via the down fast line. The slow lines, up fast and junction leading to the high level bridge where all damaged.

  • @pjdscott Thats the news for you. Hype things up so they sound worse than they are. Putting "Carriages" instead of "Hoppers" on the bulitin probably doubled thier viewing figures.

  • @westerkirk1958 gner stock can they just dont like too as it puts the trains in reverse formation

  • Heck!! Well caught.

  • awesome footy man

  • omg :o serious stuff there m8 good shot.

  • there was a set of defective points on the gateshead side of the high level bridge stopping any movements . weight restrictions cab be removed in an emergency .

  • We will have to wait for the official report. Looks like a bearing seized or axle went on one of the wagons.

  • i saw that on the north east tonight news

  • great vid here pal :D

may i ask what was on the rear power car at 1 min 54 secs

    many thanks
